Honoring the songs and styles that have shaped our country from Traditional Folk to Ragtime, Old-Time and Early Country, The New Quintet features storyteller and musicologist Nicholas Edward Williams (Guitar, Vocals), Emma Dubose (Fiddle, Vocals), Jade Watts (Upright Bass, Vocals), Gordon Inman (Clarinet) and Cody Ray (Guitar, Lap Steel). The ensemble's big harmonies, intricate melodies and lush textures rain upon both original and reimagined traditional material. Since forming in 2020 while making Williams' critically acclaimed release Folk Songs For Old Times' Sake, which has been heralded by well-regarded figures of the roots community such as David Holt, Oliver Wood, Dom Flemons, and JP Harris, The New Quintet has been on stages throughout the Southeast at festivals, concert series, listening rooms and theaters, and will be unveiling their first release in late 2023.

The Young Fables (TYF) create music with classic storytelling weaved into Americana roots music with pop sensibilities. East Tennessee (Maryville) natives, Laurel Wright and Wes Lunsford are influenced by timeless treasures like Patsy Cline, Bonnie Raitt, Glen Campbell and Chet Atkins. The duo’s unique sound has resonated with audiences around the globe as live performances have become stages from which The Young Fables discuss themes and topics typically saved for the therapy couch. Strong advocates for mental health awareness, The Young Fables are focused on helping to erase the stigmas surrounding the topic. Recognizing the duo’s advocacy, the pair were honored with The Troy Gentry Compassion Award in 2021 for compassion, commitment, kindness and love.

The next word in our Smoky Mountain Word of the Week series is Hog Rifle!
A hog rifle refers to a large, homemade gun used for hunting wild hogs. These rifles were crafted with precision by skilled mountain craftsmen and were essential for providing food for families in the region! This word originated from the Southern Appalachian region during the 1890s!
Have you ever heard of a hog rifle before?
